Lunch at the Counter, Dinner in Your Memory: Why Toro in the South End Earns Every Superlative

There is a particular kind of restaurant that stops you mid-bite and makes you set down your fork — not because anything is wrong, but because something is so right that you need a second to acknowledge it. Toro, the beloved Barcelona-style tapas bar tucked into the South End’s bustling Columbus Avenue, does that to me every single time.

Chef-owners Ken Oringer and Jamie Bissonnette opened Toro back in 2005, and nearly two decades later the place still hums with the kind of energy that newer restaurants spend millions trying to manufacture. The room itself is long and narrow, all warm wood and exposed brick, with a lively open kitchen anchoring one end and a communal bar running most of the length. It feels immediately like somewhere you belong, even on your first visit.

The food is rooted in the spirit of a Spanish tapas bar — small plates designed for sharing, built around peak-season ingredients and technique that never shows off just for the sake of it. The maíz asado, their signature grilled corn with aioli, lime, and espelette pepper, has been on the menu since the beginning and for very good reason. It is the kind of dish that makes you wonder why you ever eat corn any other way. The gambas al ajillo arrive in a terracotta cazuela still spitting with garlic-infused olive oil, begging you to drag crusty bread through every last drop.

From there, the menu opens up in genuinely exciting directions. The Ibérico ham, sliced thin and served simply, is as close as you will get in Boston to standing at a bar in San Sebastián. The wood-grilled skirt steak with chimichurri and fried egg is a study in how a few well-chosen ingredients can outperform a dish ten times more complicated. And the pan con tomate — grilled bread rubbed with ripe tomato and a drizzle of good olive oil — is almost embarrassingly good for something so elemental.

A word about the wine and cocktail list: it is thoughtful without being precious. Spanish reds and whites anchor the wine program, the sherry options are genuinely worth exploring, and the bartenders know their way around a good Negroni. Go with a group if you can. The sharing format rewards the company.

The South End neighborhood itself makes for a wonderful evening around a Toro reservation. Walk down Tremont Street before dinner, duck into a gallery, pick up something at one of the boutiques, and arrive at Columbus Avenue ready to settle in. On warmer evenings the sidewalk outside comes alive; in winter the warm amber glow of the interior pulls you in like a lighthouse.

Reservations are strongly recommended — this is not a secret, and the room fills fast — but the bar area typically holds some walk-in space if you are willing to linger with a glass of Txakoli and let the evening take its time. And at Toro, taking your time is really the whole point.
