Schedel Arboretum Proved Toledo Has World-Class Gardens — Now Meet Their Quiet Rival: Secor Metropark

There is a particular kind of afternoon that Toledo does better than almost any city its size — the kind where you find yourself completely outdoors, completely unhurried, and completely surprised by how much beauty was hiding in plain sight. Secor Metropark, tucked into the western edge of Lucas County near Berkey, delivers that afternoon with almost embarrassing reliability.

I drove out on a Tuesday in late September, half-expecting a nice-enough municipal greenspace with a parking lot and some mowed grass. What I found instead was more than 600 acres of old-growth oak and hickory forest, a restored wetland that practically hums with wildlife, and a trail network so well-maintained that I kept checking my watch in disbelief at how many hours had slipped by. The main trailhead off Jeffers Road drops you into the woods almost immediately, and within five minutes the sounds of traffic are completely gone.

The park is part of the Toledo Metroparks system — one of the most quietly impressive park networks in the Midwest — and Secor is arguably its most serene chapter. The forested trails wind through mature hardwoods that have been growing here for well over a century. In fall, the canopy turns every shade of amber and rust imaginable, and the fallen leaves on the trail make that satisfying crunch underfoot that genuinely cannot be manufactured. In spring, the wildflower displays along the Upland Forest Trail are extraordinary: trillium, wild ginger, spring beauty, and mayapple carpeting the forest floor in a way that stops you mid-step.

The restored pond and wetland area near the center of the park is a serious draw for birders. Great blue herons are practically residents, and during migration season the variety of waterfowl and warblers is remarkable enough that you will see people with binoculars the size of small telescopes set up along the wooden observation platform. Bring yours, or simply stand there and let the scene do the work — either approach is perfectly valid.

Families will appreciate the well-placed picnic shelters that can be reserved through the Metroparks website, and the trail difficulty is manageable enough for kids and older walkers without sacrificing genuine natural beauty. Dogs are welcome on leash, and the parking areas are free, which in 2024 feels like its own small miracle.

What makes Secor feel genuinely special rather than merely pleasant is the sense that the land has been respected rather than tidied into submission. The fallen logs stay. The wild edges remain. The whole park reads as a place where the ecology was allowed to reassert itself, and the result is something that feels authentic in a way that is increasingly rare.

Toledo gets a lot of credit for its glass legacy and its museum, and it deserves every bit of that credit. But the city’s park system is an equal-caliber achievement that far too few visitors ever discover. Secor Metropark is the proof. Clear a weekday morning, pack a thermos, and drive west. You will not be checking your phone much once you get there — and that, truly, is the whole point.
