The Five Arts Garden Walk Is One Thing — But the Real Treasure Hides Inside Cleveland’s Gordon Square

Pull up on West 78th Street on a Third Friday evening and you will think for a moment that you have stumbled onto the set of a film about the perfect artists’ colony. Warehouse doors swing open. Strings of warm light spill onto the sidewalk. The smell of fresh oil paint drifts out to meet you before you even step inside. Welcome to 78th Street Studios — Cleveland’s largest working art complex and, pound for pound, one of the most alive creative spaces in the entire Midwest.

Tucked into the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood on Cleveland’s near west side, 78th Street Studios occupies a converted industrial complex that once hummed with manufacturing. Today, more than 60 working artists keep studios inside its rambling, high-ceilinged corridors — painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, ceramic artists, mixed-media creators, and jewelers among them. On any given weekday you can pop in and find somebody at a press, at an easel, at a kiln. But if you really want to experience this place at full voltage, you come on the third Friday of the month, when the building throws open every door for its famous monthly art walk from 5 to 9 p.m.

The Third Friday openings are genuinely unlike any gallery event I have experienced anywhere. There are no velvet ropes, no hushed reverence, no intimidating white-cube silence. Artists stand in their own doorways. They talk to you about the work in progress still drying on the wall behind them. You can ask the sculptor how she sourced the salvaged steel. You can ask the photographer what drew him to that particular lakefront light. They will tell you, enthusiastically, at length, because these are people who chose to open their studio doors to strangers precisely because they want the conversation.

The building itself rewards slow exploration. Wander down a corridor expecting to find one studio and you discover a shared gallery, then a ceramics cooperative, then a framing shop, then a jeweler who makes pieces that look like they belong in a museum vitrine. There is a print studio where editions of limited-run works are sold at prices that are, frankly, astonishing for the quality. Budget more time than you think you need. The place has a habit of keeping you.

Beyond the individual studios, 78th Street hosts a dedicated gallery space — the 78th Street Studios Gallery — that mounts rotating group and solo exhibitions throughout the year. These shows are serious undertakings, professionally curated, and free to attend. They cover everything from large-scale installation work to intimate photography series, and they change regularly enough that repeat visits always surface something new.

What makes 78th Street Studios feel different from the standard gallery-going experience is the texture of the place. You are not looking at finished objects mounted behind glass for the benefit of collectors. You are walking through a living workspace. The paint stains on the concrete floors are real. The work-in-progress canvases leaning against the walls are real. The creative fatigue and creative excitement on the faces of the people inside are real. Cleveland has poured genuine civic energy into supporting its arts community, and this building is one of the most tangible results of that investment.

Detroit-Shoreway itself is worth a stroll before or after your visit. The Gordon Square Arts District anchors this stretch of Detroit Avenue with independent restaurants, coffee shops, and bars that have grown up around the creative community. Grab a seat somewhere nearby for dinner, then walk the couple of blocks to 78th Street. Parking is easy — a surface lot sits right beside the complex, and street parking along W. 78th fills in around it. There is no admission charge on Third Friday. The only cost is your time, and that is entirely, happily spent.

Cleveland has more arts infrastructure than most visitors expect, and more civic pride about it than almost any other Rust Belt city its size. 78th Street Studios is one of the clearest expressions of both. Go on a Third Friday. Stay longer than you planned. Buy something you love from the person who made it. That is the full experience, and it is a very good one.
