Crystal Creek Snowshoe Loop Turns an Ordinary Winter Weekend Into Something You’ll Talk About for Years

There is a moment about a mile into The Crags Trail when the lodgepole pines part just enough to reveal a wall of volcanic rock formations jutting skyward like the ruins of some ancient fortress. You stop. You catch your breath — partly from the altitude, partly from the sheer audacity of the scenery. This is Teller County at its most theatrical, and it is sitting right there above Woodland Park, waiting for you to show up.

The Crags Trail sits in the Pike National Forest, accessed via Teller County Road 62 off Highway 67 south of Divide, a short and scenic drive from Woodland Park’s main street. The trailhead begins at Crags Campground, a genuinely lovely USFS facility that smells of pine resin and campfire smoke and feels like the Colorado you came here to find. Day hikers and campers share the space generously, and the vibe is relaxed, unhurried, and refreshingly free of pretense.

The trail itself climbs roughly 3.5 miles round-trip to the base of the dramatic rock crags, gaining about 900 feet in elevation along the way. That elevation gain is real — you’re starting at around 10,900 feet — but the trail is well-maintained, clearly marked, and manageable for anyone in reasonable shape who takes their time. Families with older kids do it regularly. Solo hikers and couples make up the bulk of the weekday crowd. Dogs on leashes are welcome, and they tend to be very enthusiastic about the whole thing.

What makes The Crags genuinely special isn’t just the geological drama at the top, though the fractured trachyte spires are absolutely worth every step. It’s the entire journey. Wildflower meadows in June and July explode with color in a way that feels almost excessive. Aspen groves flicker gold in late September. In winter, the route transforms into one of the finest snowshoe experiences in the Pikes Peak region — quiet, crystalline, and completely different from the summer version. Every season hands you a new version of the same trail, and all of them are good.

Wildlife sightings are common here. Mule deer appear at dusk near the campground. Clark’s nutcrackers call from the upper pines. If you’re lucky and quiet, you might spot a pika darting between rocks near the formations themselves — those small, round-eared creatures that seem impossibly suited to the high country. Plan your arrival for a weekday morning if solitude matters to you; summer weekends bring a crowd, and the trailhead parking area fills early.

Bring layers regardless of the forecast. At nearly 11,000 feet, afternoon thunderstorms are a real summertime consideration, and temperatures can swing dramatically between a warm morning start and a breezy, cool summit. Trekking poles help on the steeper sections. Carry more water than you think you need, and bring snacks — this isn’t a place to rush through.

After your hike, Woodland Park is only about 20 minutes away and fully stocked with places to eat, resupply, and decompress. But honestly, the mountain tends to keep you longer than you planned. You’ll sit at the base of those crags, looking south toward Pikes Peak, and the idea of leaving will seem much less urgent than it did at the trailhead. That feeling is the whole point. Come find it for yourself.
