Pickerel Lake Isn’t the Only Gem in Kent County — Let Reeds Lake Remind You Why You Live Here

There are lakes in Michigan, and then there is Reeds Lake. Tucked inside the quiet, tree-lined streets of East Grand Rapids — a neighborhood that manages to feel like a lakeside resort town without ever trying too hard — Reeds Lake is the kind of place that makes you stop mid-stride, pull out your phone, and then put it back in your pocket because no photograph is ever going to do it justice.

The Reeds Lake Trail is a paved, roughly 2.7-mile loop that circles the entire lake, and it is one of the most genuinely pleasant walks or bike rides in the greater Grand Rapids area. You can pick it up at several access points, but the Reeds Lake Trailhead near Gaslight Village is my personal favorite starting spot. Park along Wealthy Street or grab a spot near the village, and within three minutes you are watching a pair of herons loiter at the water’s edge like they own the place — which, honestly, they might.

The trail rolls past manicured lawns, century-old homes with wraparound porches, and stretches of open shoreline where the light hits the water in that particular gold-and-silver way that only happens in West Michigan on a late afternoon in September. In summer, kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders dot the surface. In fall, the maple canopy overhead turns the whole loop into something that feels almost theatrical. Even in winter, when the lake edges freeze and a light snow coats the path, there is something bracingly beautiful about the circuit.

What makes Reeds Lake Trail stand apart from other urban walks is the variety packed into a single loop. You will pass the historic Aquinas College boathouse, dip through shaded stretches that feel genuinely wild, and then emerge at the open park sections where families spread out blankets and kids feed ducks with the kind of enthusiasm that reminds you why simple things matter. The adjacent Reeds Lake Park offers a small beach, a boat launch, and restrooms — practical details that make a long visit easy and comfortable.

After your loop, Gaslight Village is right there waiting: a charming cluster of independent shops, coffee spots, and restaurants that all feel refreshingly un-chain. Grab a coffee, sit outside, and watch the neighborhood go about its Saturday morning. It feels like a reward you have earned, even though the trail was never hard enough to really earn anything.

East Grand Rapids is only about ten minutes from downtown, but Reeds Lake operates on a completely different frequency — slower, quieter, and anchored to the rhythm of the water. Whether you are a longtime local who has somehow never made the loop, or a visitor who wants to see Grand Rapids outside of the breweries and museums, this is the afternoon I would hand you without hesitation.

Lace up a comfortable pair of shoes, bring a friend, and let the lake do what it has been doing for generations: making people feel, for a couple of hours at least, like everything is going to be just fine.
