Sacrifice Cliff and the South Rimrock Trail Will Rearrange Your Priorities

There is a moment, maybe twenty minutes into the South Rimrock Trail, when the city of Billings drops away behind you and the whole Yellowstone Valley opens up ahead, and you think: how did I not know this was here? That moment is exactly why I keep coming back to Sacrifice Cliff — one of the most dramatically situated walking trails in the American West, sitting right on the edge of Billings like a well-kept confidence.

The South Rimrock Trail runs along the top of the sandstone rimrock formation that defines Billings’ northern and eastern skyline, and the Sacrifice Cliff section — perched at the eastern end near the old airport — is the most storied stretch of all. The cliff takes its name from a piece of Crow Nation oral history: two young warriors, returning from a raid to find their village devastated by smallpox, are said to have blindfolded their horses and ridden off the edge in an act of grief and solidarity with those they had lost. Whether you encounter that story before you arrive or learn it on the trail, it stays with you. The land here carries weight.

But the trail itself is anything but somber. It is invigorating in the way only high, open country can be. The path runs along the rim for roughly two miles one way, with the basalt and sandstone dropping sharply on one side and wide Montana sky pressing down from above. On a clear morning — and Billings gets an extraordinary number of those — you can see the Beartooth Range to the south, the Pryor Mountains to the southeast, and the broad tan ribbon of the Yellowstone River threading through the valley below. The light changes fast up here. Come at golden hour and you will understand immediately why photographers and painters keep returning.

The trail is accessible from the Sacrifice Cliff parking area off Airport Road on Billings’ east side, just minutes from downtown. The footing is generally solid packed dirt and rock, with a few short scrambles that add a little adventure without demanding technical gear. Good walking shoes are sufficient for most of the route, though trail runners or hiking boots will serve you better if you plan to explore the rougher spur paths closer to the edge. Bring water — the exposure means wind, and wind means you dry out faster than you expect.

Dogs are welcome on leash, and you will see locals out here at all hours, from early-morning runners to families watching the sun go down. That mix of people tells you something: this is not a tourist attraction that locals tolerate. It is a place Billings residents actually use, actually love, and feel quietly proud to share.

There is no admission fee, no gift shop, no interpretive center. Just rimrock, sky, history, and one of the finest panoramas in Montana. Give it two hours and comfortable shoes, and Sacrifice Cliff will give you something worth carrying home.
