Broken Spoke Has Been Two-Stepping Since 1964 — and Austin Is Better for It

There is a hand-painted sign above the entrance that reads “Please do not use profanity or rough language.” Inside, a pair of worn boots hangs from the rafters. A jukebox glows in the corner. And on the dance floor — sawdust underfoot, a live band tuning up on the low stage — strangers become partners within thirty seconds of the first fiddle note. This is the Broken Spoke, and it has been exactly this way, give or take a decade or two of memories, since James White opened its doors in 1964.

The Spoke sits on South Lamar Boulevard, wedged between a modern apartment complex and a smoothie shop, which somehow makes it feel even more defiant and essential. Step through that wooden door and the rest of Austin — the tech campuses, the kombucha bars, the rooftop cocktail lounges — simply ceases to exist. You are in Texas. Real Texas. The kind that Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, George Strait, and Kris Kristofferson all knew well enough to perform on this very stage.

The venue is deceptively sprawling. Out front is the restaurant and bar, where the chicken-fried steak has been feeding hungry dancers for decades and where the brisket plate arrives without ceremony or pretense — just good, honest food at prices that feel like a throwback. Grab a Lone Star or a sweet tea, pull up a barstool, and take a few minutes to study the walls. They are practically a museum exhibit on their own: photographs, newspaper clippings, album covers, and memorabilia stacked from floor to ceiling, each piece a chapter in Austin music history.

Beyond the dining room, the dance hall opens up into something genuinely magical on weekend nights. The Broken Spoke hosts live music most Tuesdays through Saturdays, with a rotating cast of honky-tonk, Western swing, and classic country acts that know how to keep a floor moving. Do not worry if you have never two-stepped in your life. The Spoke offers free dance lessons before the band starts, typically around seven or eight in the evening, and the instructors are patient, encouraging, and clearly having the time of their lives. Within a half-hour, most first-timers are making their way around the floor with something approaching actual confidence.

The crowd on any given night is one of the great pleasures of the place. You will find weathered regulars who have been coming since the Carter administration dancing next to UT students celebrating a birthday, next to tourists from Germany who stumbled in off South Lamar and decided this was the best accidental decision they had made in years. Nobody is performing for anyone else. Everyone is just there to dance, drink, and be glad they came.

James White passed away in 2021, but his family has kept the spirit — and the sawdust — intact. The Broken Spoke is not a theme park version of Texas honky-tonk culture. It is the living, breathing original. Come on a Saturday night, wear something you can move in, and leave your irony at the door. Austin has plenty of places that are cool because they are trying to be. The Broken Spoke is cool because it never had to try at all.
