Ride the Wild Side of the Mississippi: The Quad Cities’ Best Kept Adventure Is at Davenport’s Arsenal Island Bicycle Loop

There is a moment, somewhere around the second mile of pedaling across Arsenal Island, when the Mississippi River opens up on both sides of you and you realize you are essentially riding a bicycle through the middle of one of America’s great rivers. The Illinois shore glitters to your south, the Davenport skyline anchors the north, and bald eagles — genuine, magnificent bald eagles — wheel overhead without a care in the world. It is one of those experiences that stops feeling like exercise and starts feeling like something you’ll be describing at dinner parties for years.

Arsenal Island sits in the heart of the Mississippi between Davenport and Rock Island, Illinois, and the roughly 11-mile perimeter loop that traces its edges is, without question, one of the most quietly spectacular cycling routes in the entire Midwest. The island is home to the U.S. Army’s Rock Island Arsenal, which means access requires a valid photo ID at the gate checkpoint — a small formality that, frankly, keeps the crowds refreshingly thin. Once you’re through, the place feels almost like a national park that most people don’t know exists.

The paved loop itself is smooth and well-maintained, hugging the island’s shoreline with long, flat stretches ideal for riders of all ability levels. You don’t need to be a serious cyclist to enjoy this. Families with kids, casual weekend riders, and seasoned road bikers all find their rhythm here. Rental bikes are available in the Quad Cities area if you don’t have your own, and the flat terrain means even younger riders can handle the full route without complaint.

What makes the loop genuinely special, beyond the scenery, is the layering of history all around you. The Arsenal has operated continuously since 1862, and the island is dotted with Civil War-era limestone buildings, a Confederate cemetery that is both sobering and beautiful, and sweeping river views that haven’t changed much in a century and a half. There is a real sense of time slowing down out here, of being somewhere that the modern world hasn’t entirely swallowed up.

Wildlife watching is a serious draw in its own right. The island is a federally designated habitat for bald eagles, and winter months bring particularly impressive concentrations of them roosting in the cottonwoods along the shore. In warmer months, great blue herons stalk the shallows, white pelicans cruise past in lazy formations, and white-tailed deer graze at the edges of the open meadows like they own the place — which, in every practical sense, they do.

Plan your visit for a weekday morning if you want the most peaceful experience. Gates open early, the light on the river is extraordinary before noon, and you’ll often have long stretches of the loop entirely to yourself. Bring water, pack a light lunch, and give yourself at least two hours to do the ride justice. There are benches and picnic spots scattered along the route where stopping and simply watching the river move is a perfectly acceptable activity.

Davenport sits on one of America’s great rivers, and most visitors spend their time admiring it from the bank. Arsenal Island is the rare place where you get to be genuinely inside it — surrounded by current, history, and sky. That combination is hard to beat anywhere, and nearly impossible to find this close to a city center.
