Albany’s Pump Station Brewery Turns Industrial History Into Something Worth Drinking To

There are brewpubs, and then there is C.H. Evans Brewing at the Albany Pump Station — a place so architecturally jaw-dropping that you might forget, for a moment, to order your beer. Tucked into a restored 1874 Romanesque Revival pumping station on Quackenbush Square, this landmark sits in the heart of downtown Albany and manages to be simultaneously a working brewery, a full-service restaurant, and one of the most visually spectacular interiors in the entire Capital Region.

The building itself was once the city’s actual water pumping station, and the bones of that industrial past are very much on display. The moment you walk through the doors, your eyes travel upward — way upward — to soaring 45-foot ceilings, exposed brick arches, ornate ironwork, and massive original steam engines that stand like iron sentinels along the walls. The engines no longer pump water, of course, but they lend the room an almost cathedral-like gravitas that no decorator could manufacture. The effect is stunning. It’s the kind of space that makes you slow down, look around, and feel genuinely grateful you stumbled in.

But C.H. Evans is not resting on the glory of its architecture. The brewing program here is serious. The house beers rotate seasonally and span a satisfying range — crisp lagers, sessionable ales, robust stouts, and IPAs with enough backbone to hold their own against the cavernous room. The Evans Gold, a clean and approachable American lager, is a reliable starting point, while the darker winter seasonals are the kind of thing you think about on the drive home. The bar staff knows their product, which makes asking for recommendations feel like a genuine conversation rather than a sales pitch.

The food menu more than holds its own. This is not a kitchen content to coast on bar snacks. Expect hearty, well-executed American fare: thick-cut burgers, perfectly respectable fish and chips, generous sandwiches, and rotating specials that reflect the seasons. The portions are honest, the prices are reasonable for downtown Albany, and the kitchen keeps pace even when the dining room fills up on a weekend evening. A Sunday brunch here — with the light filtering through the high arched windows and a Bloody Mary made with house-brewed tomato beer — ranks among Albany’s finer weekend rituals.

The location is excellent for visitors. Quackenbush Square sits just off Broadway in the lower end of downtown, walkable from the riverfront and a short stroll from the Hudson. Parking is accessible, and the venue is large enough that walk-ins typically find a seat, though reservations make sense for groups.

What C.H. Evans does best, beyond the beer and the food, is make Albany feel proud of itself. This is a city that knows its history, and this building wears that history openly and beautifully. Spending an evening here — beneath those vaulted brick arches, pint in hand, watching the old engines preside over the dining room — feels like a proper Albany experience. Go once and you will understand why regulars keep coming back.
