Helio Castroneves, a celebrated figure in the racing world with four Indy 500 victories under his belt, recently shared a personal anecdote about receiving a speeding ticket. Known for his high-speed prowess on the racetrack, Castroneves admitted that his need for speed once extended to public roads.
During a recent appearance on the show ‘Planet Tyrus,’ the 51-year-old Brazilian recounted being pulled over by law enforcement for driving at triple-digit speeds. Castroneves humorously recalled the interaction, saying, “I remember once that, that I was in the three digits and the policeman’s like, ‘Oh, look, you can’t do this.'” Despite his racing background, he acknowledged the officer’s right to issue a ticket.
Reflecting on his younger days, Castroneves mentioned that he was frequently stopped by police for speeding. However, he credits his daughter, now 16, for encouraging him to adopt safer driving habits. “After I have a kid, she’s now 16 years old, but I have to behave myself,” he said. “So knock on wood. Now I’m being a good boy.”
When it comes to rental cars, Castroneves prefers those with low mileage, though he often ends up with what he describes as “beat-up cars.” Despite their condition, he finds comfort in their pleasant smell and is cautious not to push them to their limits to avoid breakdowns.
Preparing for the Indy 500
As Castroneves gears up for the upcoming Indy 500, where he aims to secure a record fifth win, he also shared a bit of Brazilian culture. On the show, he taught a co-host a playful Brazilian phrase used in jiu-jitsu circles, which translates to “suck that the cane, you sucker.” This expression, he explained, is a light-hearted form of trash talk.
The Indy 500 is set to take place on Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with the race beginning at 12:45 p.m. ET. Fans can watch the event on FOX as Castroneves attempts to make history once again.
