Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd believes the program’s recent trip to the Final Four can become a regular expectation rather than a one-time achievement. He expressed confidence that the Wildcats can sustain that level of success moving forward.
Forward Mabil Mawut has started a project called Children of the Nile aimed at helping young people in his native South Sudan through basketball. The initiative plans to collect basketball shoes to send to South Sudanese youth, with the goal of giving them opportunities “to play and believe.” The effort also includes mentorship programs, youth camps and clinics, and partnerships with local communities.
Mawut, who redshirted this past season, has a personal connection to the work. He was born in a Sudanese refugee camp, began playing basketball after his family moved to Uganda, and later trained at the NBA Academy Africa in Senegal before arriving in the United States. “I lived the path,” he wrote of his experiences. “Now I’m building one for the next kid in camp who sees a basketball and sees a future.”

Another Arizona forward, Ivan Kharchenkov, announced plans to host a youth basketball camp on May 16 in Germany, with his father—a former professional player and member of the Soviet Union national team—listed among the coaches. Kharchenkov is expected back with the Wildcats next season, though he could explore NBA Draft options; the NBA Combine is scheduled for May 13–17 in Chicago for any prospects who receive invitations.
