Wander Through Wonder: Why the Annenberg Community Beach House Belongs on Every LA Itinerary

There is a stretch of Santa Monica coastline that feels like it belongs to another era — one of elegant swimming parties, sun-bleached glamour, and the easy confidence of people who know they have found something truly good. The Annenberg Community Beach House carries all of that history in its bones, and yet it manages to feel completely alive and welcoming today. This place stopped me in my tracks the first time I visited, and I have been finding reasons to go back ever since.

Tucked along Pacific Coast Highway at 415 PCH in Santa Monica, the Beach House sits on the former estate of Marion Davies, the celebrated actress and one-time companion of William Randolph Hearst. The guest pool that anchors the property — a 110-foot beauty with a Spanish Colonial surround — was originally built for Davies herself in the 1920s. Swimming laps here, with the Pacific breeze drifting in from just beyond the dunes, feels like a small act of living history. The pool is open to the public for a very modest fee, which still strikes me as almost improbably generous given how stunning the setting is.

Beyond the pool, the grounds unfold into something genuinely unexpected for a public beach facility. A restored beach club building houses a gallery space that rotates thoughtful art and photography exhibitions, often with a connection to ocean culture, community life, or California history. There is no charge to wander through, and on a Tuesday morning when the crowds are thin, it can feel like having a private gallery with an ocean view. The adjacent Marion Davies Guest House — a beautifully preserved Colonial Revival cottage — is available for tours and adds an almost cinematic layer to the whole visit.

Families come here for the beach play area and the sand volleyball courts. Serious swimmers come for the lap pool. Artists and photographers come for the gallery. Friends come to sit in the Adirondack chairs on the lawn and simply look at the water. What makes the Annenberg Community Beach House work so well is that it accommodates all of these people without feeling crowded or compromised. The programming calendar runs year-round and includes film screenings, yoga classes on the lawn, and seasonal events that draw both longtime Angelenos and curious first-time visitors.

Parking is available on-site, which in Santa Monica alone makes this place worth bookmarking. The facility is operated by the City of Santa Monica and supported by the Annenberg Foundation, which explains the quality of upkeep and the breadth of free and low-cost programming. Nothing here feels like an afterthought.

If you are building an itinerary that actually reflects the texture and soul of Los Angeles — not just the marquee stops, but the places where real life unfolds beautifully — put the Annenberg Community Beach House near the top of your list. Come for a swim, stay for the art, and leave wondering why it took you so long to find it.
