Paddling Into Paradise: Why Slide Lake Should Be on Every Jackson Hole Itinerary

There is a moment, about twenty minutes into a kayak glide across Slide Lake, when the Gros Ventre Mountains rise up on three sides, the water turns a shade of green that has no business existing in nature, and you realize you have somehow stumbled into one of the most quietly spectacular corners of Wyoming. No lift tickets required. No reservation system. Just a gravel pullout, a boat on the water, and roughly forty-five square miles of jaw-dropping scenery that most visitors to Jackson Hole never bother to find.

Slide Lake sits in the Gros Ventre Valley, about twelve miles northeast of the town of Jackson along Gros Ventre Road. The drive itself is worth the trip — you wind past sagebrush flats where pronghorn graze at arm’s length, cross a narrow bridge over the Gros Ventre River, and eventually arrive at a lake that owes its very existence to one of the largest landslides in recorded North American history. Back in 1925, a massive chunk of Sheep Mountain let loose and dammed the river, creating this lake almost overnight. The evidence is still visible on the scarred hillside to the south, a geological footnote that gives the whole place a sense of drama before you even dip a paddle.

The public boat ramp at the eastern end of the lake is your launching point. It is primitive and unassuming, which is exactly why it works. Rent a kayak or canoe in Jackson from one of several outfitters, strap it to the roof, and make the easy morning drive. Arrive before ten o’clock and you will often have the glassy water almost entirely to yourself. The lake stretches roughly two miles, and a leisurely paddle to the far western end and back takes about two hours — long enough to feel like an adventure, short enough to leave time for a tailgate lunch with a view.

Wildlife here is extraordinary and unhurried. Moose wade the shallow coves on the north shore with a casual indifference to human observers. Osprey hang in thermals overhead before folding into steep dives. In late summer, white pelicans — yes, pelicans, this far inland — congregate in loafing flocks near the inlet. Bring binoculars and plan to stop paddling more than you expect.

For hikers, the Gros Ventre Slide Interpretive Trail begins just past the lake and takes about thirty minutes to walk. Informational signs explain the 1925 slide in vivid detail, and the elevated perspective looking back down over the lake is one of the better unpublicized viewpoints in the entire valley.

Camping is available at the Atherton Creek Campground right on the lakeshore, managed by Bridger-Teton National Forest. Sites are first-come, first-served for most of the season, fees are modest, and waking up to still water reflecting the Sleeping Indian ridgeline is the kind of experience that tends to rearrange a person’s priorities. There are no hookups, no camp store, and no crowd — just fire rings, pine trees, and the unhurried rhythm of a place that has not been overly discovered.

What makes Slide Lake so satisfying is its accessibility paired with its sense of genuine remoteness. You are twenty minutes from a gas station and a great burger, yet the valley feels genuinely wild. It threads a needle that is surprisingly hard to find: approachable enough for families, spectacular enough to satisfy anyone who has spent time in serious backcountry. Whether you spend a full day on the water, an afternoon on the interpretive trail, or simply pull over at the overlook to watch the light change on the mountains, this place delivers the kind of unhurried, unscripted Wyoming experience that people come to Jackson Hole hoping to find — and too often overlook in the rush toward better-known landmarks.

Do yourself a favor and put Slide Lake on the itinerary before your next trip. You will wonder how it stayed off your radar this long.
