Where the Marsh Meets Your Morning: Discovering Inlet Point Plantation Paddling at Pawleys Island

There is a version of the Grand Strand that has nothing to do with neon signs, souvenir shops, or bumper-to-bumper traffic on Kings Highway. It exists just beyond the noise, tucked into the slow-moving blackwater creeks and cypress-draped swamps that have defined this Carolina coast for centuries. I found that version on a kayak, gliding through the tannin-stained waters of the Black River with Black River Outdoors Center & Expeditions, and I have been thinking about it ever since.

Black River Outdoors is based in Pawleys Island, roughly 25 miles south of central Myrtle Beach — close enough to make it a genuine day trip, far enough that it feels like a completely different world. They offer guided kayak and canoe tours through some of the most ecologically rich waterways in the Carolinas, including stretches of the Black River that wind past ancient bald cypress trees, some of which are among the oldest living organisms on the eastern seaboard. These trees were saplings before Columbus ever set sail. That fact alone is worth the drive.

The guides here know their stuff. On my morning tour, our guide pointed out a great blue heron standing motionless in the shallows like a piece of driftwood that suddenly had opinions, identified the call of a prothonotary warbler from somewhere deep in the tree canopy, and explained the science behind why blackwater rivers run the color of strong tea. It is the tannic acid from decaying vegetation — and somehow that explanation makes the water even more beautiful rather than less.

You do not need prior paddling experience to enjoy these tours. The staff sets you up with everything: a sit-on-top kayak or canoe, a paddle, a life vest, and enough instruction to feel confident within about ten minutes on the water. The pace is relaxed, the current is gentle on most routes, and the whole experience feels more like a moving meditation than an athletic challenge. Families with kids, couples celebrating anniversaries, solo travelers looking for something real — I watched all of them on the water that day, and every single face wore the same expression of quiet wonder.

Tours run year-round, and the shoulder seasons — spring and fall — offer particularly spectacular conditions. Spring brings wildflowers along the banks and an explosion of bird activity. Fall turns the cypress needles a warm amber that reflects off the dark water in a way that seems almost too beautiful to be accidental. Summer tours launch early to beat the heat, and even then the tree canopy provides enough shade to keep things comfortable.

Black River Outdoors also offers multi-day camping expeditions for those who want to go deeper into the wilderness, as well as guided swamp tours and custom group outings. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially on weekends and during peak summer months. Their shop is located on the Waccamaw Neck, and the staff is genuinely enthusiastic about connecting visitors with the natural side of this coastline.

Most people come to Myrtle Beach for the ocean, and that makes complete sense. But the inland waterways of this region carry their own kind of magic — older, quieter, and entirely unforgettable. An afternoon on the Black River has a way of recalibrating your sense of what a vacation can be. Bring sunscreen, bring your curiosity, and leave your expectations at the put-in. The river will take care of the rest.
